Desktop applications are installed and run on the user’s computing device. PCs have had to become increasingly powerful to handle the growing size and number of these applications and many organisations have to invest significant sums every few years in the “desktop refresh cycle”. Additional costs come from unexpected conflicts between new and existing applications, which require lengthy regression testing every time an application is deployed or changed. Application streaming An emerging paradigm for delivering desktop applications to end-point devices for local execution is application streaming. The application and its contingencies are “profiled” and this package is then published in an isolation environment on the server. Then, using progressive delivery and caching, the application components are streamed on demand to an isolated environment on the user’s desktop for immediate execution. All the user has to do is click on the published icon – or “play” it, as easily as playing a video clip. The application is never actually installed on the server or the desktop. This eliminates most compatibility issues and dramatically reduces the need for regression testing. Once the user has “played” the application, they can use it anytime and anywhere, whether over the network or disconnected. Citrix Project Tarpon Tarpon streams applications to a fully isolated environment on the desktop and allows users to play those applications on demand. Project Tarpon will eliminate application compatibility issues found when installing software on the desktop with traditional software distribution methods. Tarpon delivers advancements in application profiling and publishing, run-time isolation, and progressive downloading and caching. Novus are delighted to be working with Citrix on Project Tarpon. This solution will enable organisations to benefit from centralised application deployment even if the application cannot run on Presentation Server. |
